1971 Interesting Fact:
Mr. Hull’s 1970 Two Rivers HS Band was
the Contest of Champions Grand Champion and TN State Champion. Two Rivers HS was closed
in 1971 and replaced by the new McGavock HS. In essence, McGavock
was the defending COC/TN Champs in its first year of existence! |

Facts:
The 1982 McGavock Band won COC with a record high
score of 191, which lasted until 1990. Remarkably, it was the first
Tennessee band to win since 1972 (also McGavock). It managed to do all
this despite
50% turnover in membership from the previous year, a staff entirely
under the age of 30, and massive drill rewrites after band camp. |

Fact:
The 1985 McGavock Band sported new “cadet style” uniforms – only
the second uniform in the band’s history. They would be replaced
just one year later (due to fitting problems) with the two-front uniforms
that were worn until 1995. |

This band grew by 40 members over the previous year
due to the closing of DuPont HS.
The jump from 8th to 3rd is also
the biggest year-over-year improvement in placement at COC in McGavock’s
history. This year’s drill was the first McGavock show that didn’t
contain a single symmetrical (mirror-image) set. |
